In my sleep deprived state, I was more irritable and wasn’t able to take as much professional care as I should have with my business relationships. I always knew that my sleeping behavior was a problem, but when you are living life in a haze it’s hard to realize exactly how strongly your personality can be impacted by fatigue and exhaustion. I tried many medications, both prescription and over the counter. Although I felt like I was getting a deeper, more restful sleep, I had an even harder time waking up in the morning and became a chronic consumer of caffeine.
For many years the cycle of knocking myself out with medication and powering through the day with caffeine went on. It wasn’t until several years later that an across-town move changed my life. I had decided that it was time for a new bed, and due to my limited finances I selected a very moderately priced mattress. To compensate for my frugal purchase, I decided to supplement my new furnishing with what I thought would be a somewhat indulgent purchase – a memory foam pillow.
WOW – was all I could say. I never realized that such a small item could have such a powerful and long lasting effect on my daily life. The first day I woke up after using that pillow I felt like a child on Christmas morning. Instead of hitting snooze I was alert and ready to start my day.
As the day wore on, I began to feel a little sore in my neck and upper back. At first I thought this was an effect of my new pillow, but soon I realized quite the opposite. The soreness I was experiencing in the afternoons was my bodies response to my poor posture. I just never noticed it before because it had always been a factor in my life.
Giving my body a break from the negative impacts of “desk culture” gave me a new found awareness for the importance of posture. And finally, after all these years I could sleep. I started this blog because I feel that sleep is the most underrated aspect of personal health. We all know the importance of diet and exercise, but I have to say that the changes I have seen in myself now that I am well rested are astounding.
I found it easier to perform at work, I have more energy for my daily activities, and I no longer feel like I’m going through life as a zombie. It is my hope, in starting this blog, that all of the time and research I have since put into optimizing my sleep habits will provide others with the same life changing experience I have had myself.
